On June 24th, 2022 the Three Sisters Team visited Macy, NE to conduct a workshop at the Nebraska Indian Community College. Valeria conducted our first presentation which covered soil health, compositing, and soil additives. She also reviewed the gardening extension documents provided by the ISU extension office. Susana led our second presentation, which discussed gardening tips and basic plant care. After that, our team headed to the school gardens for demonstrations and planting activities. The team built three sisters mounds, illustrated how to create a potting mix, and, along with the participants, planted starter plants such as cucumbers, melons, squash, and herbs such as cilantro. To finish the experience, LaVonne provided lunch for everyone, and the team passed out extension fliers on how to start home gardens, steps for early maintenance of gardens, tips and tricks for garden care, and a list of resources available from ISU.
