Our first presentation, led by graduate students Valeria and Susana, recapped the information we covered on soil basics in previous workshops. Valeria discussed soil textures and soil particle structures, how to measure these in your own garden, and how to improve texture and structure for soil and gardening health. Susana covered how watering patterns and soil health interact to create healthy gardens. In presentation two, Susana and Valeria explained the ins and outs of rainwater gardens and catchment systems to fully utilize naturally available water sources. This was followed by a demonstration of how to create a rainwater catchment system using a trash bin, brass spigot, and some basic garden tools! After a hard day of work, the team and Santee participants were rewarded by delicious food provided by LaVonne Snake.
